Constipation, obstipation

Ideally, everyone should defecate once a day, usually in the morning. Various conditions can slow the bowel movements. This can trigger a range of adverse effects: Tiredness, drop in performance, headaches, general loss of well-being and/or a feeling of blockage or pressure in the stomach. Mayr wrote over 100 years ago that chronic damage to the digestive system is the most common and least well known of all the diseases.

Simply follow the procedure below to avoid this:

1. Drink plenty
This means consuming 3 litres of free fluids which do not need to be processed by the metabolism. These include water (top quality), still mineral water, herbal teas (brewed for a short time) and vegetable broth. The recipes can be found in the VIVA Mayr cookbook or on our website.

Fruit juices, milk, alcohol and coffee in particular do not count as free fluids. It is also important to note that the fluids should be drunk between meals and not with a meal.

2. Magnesium
Magnesium is a natural mineral which provides the bowel functions with optimal support. Magnesium is ideal in particular for people who tend to suffer from muscular cramps (especially at night) or develop constipation due to stress. Magnesium Citrate is available as a powder or in capsule form.

Take a teaspoon of Magnesium Citrate powder in the morning in a glass of warm water as your first drink of the day. This is often all it takes for a healthy bowel function. If not, repeat the process at around 11.00 in the morning. If this triggers a bowel movement, this is the quantity of magnesium you need. If not, repeat the procedure in the afternoon. You will soon find the quantity of Magnesium Citrate you need to ensure regular bowel movements. There is no need to be afraid of any side effects. Magnesium Citrate does not have any. Excessive consumption of magnesium leads to diarrhoea. In this case, simply consume less. You may need to consume more magnesium during stressful periods and less during calmer periods of your day-to-day life. Take account of this and adapt your intake accordingly.

The same result can be achieved with magnesium in capsule form but you will need to consume the corresponding number of capsules, so at least 3-5 capsules for 1 teaspoon of magnesium. Capsules are handy for when you are out and about.

3. Bitters
Bitters stimulate the bowel functions by activating the liver and gall bladder. This leads to an intense peristalsis and defecation.

Bitters can be introduced at meal times initially. Rocket, radicchio, chicory and artichoke contain bitters. But avoid consuming these foods raw in the evening. It is better to eat them cooked, steamed or grilled.

1-2 cups of liver detox tea are also beneficial. This contains bitter herbs and should ideally be drunk in the evening. Liver tea can be obtained from any pharmacist or from our online shop.

Bitters are also available as drops or as plant extracts in capsules. Our VIVA bitter elixir, cascara and black walnut tincture are very beneficial. These are consumed before meals (bitter elixir 1 teaspoon, cascara or black walnut tincture 5-10 drops). The bitter drops can also be combined with base powder in the evening and drunk before you go to sleep (not with food!).

4. Fibre
Fibre is also beneficial. Linseed, psyllium, corn grain and bran are among the traditional sources. However, be careful how much you consume. Mechanical distension can cause the bowel to become overly stressed or else the body can become used to the fibre and its effects are therefore reduced, meaning that ever greater quantities are needed. Other possibilities should also be taken into account or else focus on magnesium and bitters.

The daroSAN® DarmVital preparation from Biogena provides a good combination of fibre, bitters, magnesium and pro-biotics. This is beneficial at all the levels mentioned and great results can be obtained by combining these effects. Order from our shop…
